Movie Review: Dil Dhadhakne

It has been a long time since we have seen an Ekta Kapoor film so there was a lot of hype around this film. ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ had been a super hit where audiences and the Bollywood industry alike had loved the film, the uniqueness of the story and the relationship between the characters had bought a new dimension to film making. I, for one, had fallen in love in the soundtrack before Dil Dhadhakne Do’s release. I had so many favourites on the soundtrack, Gallan Goodiyan and Girls like to swing made me dance in my seat so i had to see how they fit into the film.  The relationships in the film had been displayed in the film’s trailer, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh were playing brother and sister, Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah played their parents and Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar were playing the sibling’s love interests.

The film is narrated by the family dog Pluto Mehra (voiced by Aamir Khan) which brings a new dimension to the film. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a self-made entrepreneur who runs the company Ayka which is on the verge of bankruptcy. He has a complicated relationship with his wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) and with his two children Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (Ranveer Singh). Ayesha is a successful business woman who has an unhappy marriage with her traditional minded husband Manav (Rahul Bose). Kabir is the prodigal son who unwillingly works for his father’s business but dreams of becoming a pilot. For their parent’s wedding anniversary, the family decide to go on a Mediterranean cruise with their closest friends. This is where the chaos ensues as all the family secrets begin spilling out creating a comedic atmosphere.

‘Dil Dhadhakne Do’ is a fun filled caper with some great initial storylines between all the characters. With so many brilliant actors in her hand, Ekta Kapoor plays to their strengths giving them some rich characters to absorb and bring to life on screen. This film is all about the father-son relationship between Kabir and Kamal and the brother-sister relationship between Ayesha and Kabir. Ranveer Singh is the star of the show, his comedic timing and the way he conveys his emotions is just fantastic and he is so enjoyable to watch. Anil Kapoor is a well rehearsed actor and he plays a role that he has played many times before. Priyanka Chopra is brilliant as Ayesha, her character does not say too much but her eyes give away how she feels in every scene. This film had all the key successful elements but what really lets it down is the rather ridiculous ending. Not enough is made of Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma’s characters and the rather open ending makes them seem like they are pointless to the storyline.

This film is a good watch but you do leave feeling rather frustrated as the ending is not clear and after a film that makes you laugh and cry, it makes the audience want a real ending.
