Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea at Aqua Shard

Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea at Aqua Shard

No longer are Afternoon Teas formal traditional affairs in tea rooms. The new Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea takes themed teas to new heights at the Aqua Shard.

I love a good themed afternoon tea and when I heard that there was a Mary Poppins afternoon tea was coming to London, I had to go check it out and experience it. The playful adventure filled afternoon tea is at the Aqua Shard and acts as tribute to the much loved Mary Poppins.

Taking inspiration from the Mary Poppins book, the afternoon tea attempts to take the ‘practically themed’ tea to new levels with the menu being presented on a gold gilded mirror, acting as a symbol of Mary’s vanity.

All the cockery is Mary Poppins themed too with prints on the plates and teacups. The details are what make a tea in my opinion and I loved seeing the beautiful plates and seeing how intricately the prints were drawn in the first place.

I had ‘Mary’s Tea’ to start with which was a mix of black teas from all over the world including rose petals. I had to say I found the taste of black tea overwhelming and I found it rather dry in after taste as well. I ordered the vegetarian afternoon tea so my sandwiches arrived – a mixture of egg and black truffle, cheddar and branston pickle and a delicious brioche roll with pesto and feta cheese. The brioche bread was absolutely delicious and I got through the sandwiches so fast.

The afternoon tea came on a custom made Mary Poppins stand, complete with the famous umbrella and boots. The stand itself held the desserts which were each more delectable than the next.

The desserts were a mixture of the following – ‘Strike Me Pink’ sponge which was like a victoria sponge cake, Mr Corry’s Gingerbread star which was a delicious crumbly biscuit and Mary’s chocolate and cherry hat. In gold tins, we had a back to front golden syrup tart which had the filling on the bottom, clotted cream and raspberries. My favourite was the Gingerbread star, it was sumptuous and I could have easily eaten a whole lot of them.

The scones came warm and soft, presented out of Mary Poppin’s bag and accompanied by strawberry jam and clotted cream. They were definitely a highlight for me and I got through them so quickly. To finish off the tea, we were presented with candy floss too. I had a great time trying out the Mary Poppins Afternoon Tea and it was a fun experience to be amazed by all the random delicious food being given to us.
