Afternoon tea at the Intercontinental Hotel Canary Wharf

The Intercontinental Hotel in Canary Wharf is rather hidden away behind the O2 so it is rather easy to miss. I went to the hotel for the afternoon tea over Christmas break and it proved to be a revelation. After we found the hotel, walking into the lobby felt like going to a hotel in Dubai. The afternoon tea was in the Meridian restaurant and as soon you are seated, you feel like you are surrounded by the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf.

The waiter recommended that I have one of the hot chocolates to start as they are all made on site and not using the powder. I had the milk chocolate hot chocolate and it had me at the first sip. It tastes delicious and is so warming, I loved it but it did fill me up immediately, perfect on a cold winter’s day.

I had the vegetarian afternoon tea whilst my friends had the normal tea. The sandwiches were placed on wooden platter and mine were cheese and pickle in white bread, cheese and cucumber on beetroot bread, avocado in white bread, falafel wraps and a cheese and celery brioche bun. The breads were deliciously fresh and honestly, I loved all of them.

My tea was the house tea and it was pink, which helped tick all the boxes. It made the perfect fruity accompaniment to my scones which were delicious. They were warm and not too sweet either so I could really enjoy them with the sweetly flavoured tea.

The desserts were the real stars of the show, each one beautifully decorated for Christmas. There was the raspberry mousse in the glass with rudolph ears and nose, a soft macaroon, a mince tart with pastry and a chocolate and ginger cake house. The orange mousse came complete with a white chocolate stocking on top. They were incredibly delicious and even though I was full, I still managed to taste all of them.

I loved my time at the Intercontinental Hotel at the O2, it had a lovely atmosphere and the afternoon tea was incredibly delicious and beautiful to look at too. The service was efficient and friendly with the waiter shared his preferences and recommendations throughout tea.
