Afternoon Tea at The Shard

As you all might have guessed by now, i have an obsession with afternoon tea. There is something so lovely about the concept which brings together two of our favourite things – desserts and scones. The best thing about it is the fact that it is so relaxed and easygoing so you can have a good catch up with friends while enjoying the delectable selection.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon i headed to The Shard for afternoon tea at one of their restaurants called TING. We were greeted with a smiling hostess who led us to our table which was made up of comfy sofas, all facing out to the sparkling River Thames with views of Tower Bridge, the Walkie Talkie and St Paul’s. I later found out that the word ‘Ting’ is Chinese for living room so the restaurant was designed to create this atmosphere and it has succeeded. There was a lady at the piano playing soft gentle melodies in the background and from the moment we arrived, we were put at ease. TING has two afternoon teas – a classic English afternoon tea or an Asian-inspired one, we had a couple of each and got comfortable.

We were first given a cold tomato soup with a crostini as an aperitif which refreshed the palette before the afternoon tea actually arrived. The traditional English afternoon tea had the all the usual suspects with sandwiches filled with cucumber and cream cheese, duck egg and mayo and roast vegetable (i had the vegetarian selection). The Asian-inspired tea had sushi, spring rolls and crab and sweet chilli tart. The desserts for both were different too with the traditional tea consisting of a lemon eclair, Victoria crown cake, strawberry tart and apple crumble and custard. The Asian-inspired tea had an almond macaroon, melon tapioca and lemongrass rice pudding. The scones were beautifully made too, soft and just warm enough to have with the jam and cream. There is nothing i can fault with the food, it was all simply delicious and the staff were only too happy to oblige by bringing more of everything out as we asked.

It was  a magical experience, having such an amazing experience surrounded by London and being able to catch up over some tasty sweet treats. The service was impeccable with us being waited hand on foot the whole time we were there. I would recommend this to anyone, it is on the pricey side so for a special occasion, it would be perfect.
